Weight and Balance

Step 1:
Place a scale under each main wheel and under the tail wheel to measure the aircraft's weight at each point.

 

Step 2:
Level the aircraft by raising the tail until the flat bottom surface of the wing is at a 9° nose-up angle.

 

Step 3:
Using a plumb bob, drop a line from the leading edge of each wing and mark the points directly below on the floor. These will serve as your leading edge reference line.

 

Step 4:
Next, drop a plumb bob from the center of the axle on each main gear and mark the floor directly beneath them.

 

Step 5:
Drop a plumb bob from the center of the tailwheel axle and mark that spot on the floor as well.

 

Step 6:
Using a straightedge or chalk line, draw a line connecting the two leading-edge marks. Then, draw a second line connecting the two main gear marks.

 

Step 7:
Measure the horizontal distance from the leading edge reference line to the main gear line—this is your main gear arm. Then, measure from the leading edge reference line to the tailwheel mark—this is your tailwheel arm.

 

Step 8:
Add the weight readings from both main gear scales to determine the main gear weight.

 

Step 9:
Record the reading from the tailwheel scale—this is your tailwheel weight.

Step 10:

Use the below table to find CG.

Multiply Main wheel Weight and Arm to find the Moment, then do the same for the Tail wheel.

Add the weight of the main wheel and tail wheel to find the total weight.

Add the moment of the main wheel and tail wheel to find the total moment.

Divide the total weight from the total moment to find the CG.

The Forward CG limit is 12.8

The Aft CG limit is 22

These limits are true for all Kolb Aircraft.
